A Stunning Variegated Monstera

The Thai Constellation is a tissue-cultured variety of Monstera Deliciosa with gorgeous cream and white speckled variegation across its leaves. While it shares many care requirements with standard Monsteras, its variegation means it needs a bit more attention to stay healthy and vibrant. The extra effort is well worth it — few plants make a statement quite like a thriving Thai Constellation.

Light — The Most Critical Factor

Variegated plants need more light than their fully green counterparts because the white and cream portions of the leaves don't produce chlorophyll. Your Thai Constellation needs bright, indirect light for at least 6-8 hours daily. Too little light will cause it to produce more green leaves to compensate, gradually losing its variegation. Too much direct sun will burn the delicate white sections faster than the green parts.

An east-facing window with gentle morning sun is ideal. South-facing windows work too if you keep the plant a few feet back or use sheer curtains to diffuse the light.

Water

Water when the top 2 inches of soil feel dry, similar to a standard Monstera. Thai Constellations can be slightly more sensitive to overwatering because their variegated sections are more prone to bacterial issues when conditions are too wet. Make sure your pot drains well and never let the plant sit in standing water. Consistency matters more than frequency — try to maintain an even rhythm rather than going between soaked and bone dry.

Humidity

Thai Constellations prefer humidity levels of 60% or higher. The white portions of the leaves are thinner and more delicate than the green sections, making them more susceptible to browning in dry air. A humidifier nearby is the most effective solution. If you notice the edges of the white variegation turning brown and crispy, low humidity is likely the culprit.

Soil and Feeding

Use a chunky, airy mix — equal parts potting soil, perlite, and orchid bark works well. This keeps roots healthy and oxygenated. Feed monthly during the growing season with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength. Avoid over-fertilizing, which can cause leaf burn, especially on the variegated sections.

Growth Expectations

Thai Constellations grow more slowly than standard Monsteras because their variegated leaves produce less energy through photosynthesis. Be patient — a few new leaves per growing season is normal and healthy. Each new leaf unfurling is a small event worth celebrating. Provide a moss pole to encourage climbing, which will help the plant produce larger, more fenestrated leaves over time.

Common Issues

Browning on white sections is the most common concern. If it's just the edges, increase humidity. If entire variegated sections are browning, check for overwatering or too much direct sun. Yellow leaves on the lower plant are normal as older leaves age out. New leaves coming in mostly green means the plant needs more light to express its variegation.
